Director, Device Applied Research

LOCATION: Redmond, WA, USA

SUMMARY: This position is responsible for managing the Applied Research team at the Center for Device Excellence at L’Oreal. The Applied Research Director is responsible for generating innovative concepts that would lead to next generation cosmetic devices. S/he will be responsible for leading a vibrant, innovative team leveraging both in-house resources and specialized consultants as well as collaborating with other specialized resources within L’Oreal and academic research centers. This position is a key leadership role with the Research & Innovation team at the Center for Device Excellence.

REPORTING: Reports to the VP of Research and Innovation

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage the device innovation program generating new device functions and cosmetic applications and demonstrating proof of concept (POC) of potential next generation cosmetic devices.
  • Manage, motivate and mentor a small in-house team of biomedical engineers and consultants in developing device technologies and demonstrating a clear POC aligned with L’Oreal evaluation methodologies.
  • Function as a member of the Research and Innovation leadership team, working closely with other leaders to develop technology roadmaps and innovation and growth strategies.
  • Collaborate with other innovation teams within L’Oreal to maximize the potential synergy between device technologies and formulation technologies.
  • Transfer to and support transition of proven device technologies into pre-development activities in engineering (Device Development team).
  • Maintain, defend and grow IP portfolio for cosmetic devices and closely-related topics; Collaborate with legal resources in Paris and NYC to address technical issues related to patent protection.
  • Provide technical guidance to L’Oreal Corporate Security addressing issues of counterfeit importation.
  • Develop and maintain awareness of global competitive landscape in home-based beauty devices and device technologies.
  • Manage team budget proactively.
  • Communicate progress to Sr. Management a regular basis supporting reviews both on site and at other L’Oreal sites.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MA/MS degree in biomedical or electrical engineering.
  • 10+ years product development experience, preferably in an entrepreneurial environment.
  • Technical expertise in one or more energy modality such as ultrasonic, LED, RF, etc.  
  • 3-5 years electronics or consumer device manufacturing experience.
  • Proven record of transitioning ideas into marketed products.
  • Experience with productizing different technologies in several different industries.
  • Experience in generating new ideas and demonstrating their viability in a free-form, often ambiguous environment.
  • Experience with patent prosecution process and IP portfolio strategies.

Director of Infrastructure & L'Oreal West Region

SUMMARY: The Director of Infrastructure is responsible for enterprise technology infrastructure and operational functions that include middleware technologies, storage, database, hardware systems, telecommunications and networking, personal computing, mobile, and email for Clarisonic. This role manages the design, build, enhancement and integration of infrastructure required to support the business portfolio or infrastructure platforms in terms of robustness, scalability, availability, efficiency while managing risk. Support initiatives that deliver workable end-to-end infrastructure solutions that are sustainable and supportable for the enterprise. Work closely with the IT Directors of SAP, Digital and Marketing and Sales and L’Oréal leadership to design solutions that meet their need and insuring those solutions meet Operational and Architectural standards.

This Director will supervise a team of technology professionals, while working closely with management, external vendors and advisors. This resource will prepare financial budgets and present proposals for capital projects to senior executives. Additional job duties may include researching and recommending new products, identifying new market opportunities and leading efforts to improve IT processes.

REPORTING: Reports to the AVP of Information Systems at Clarisonic

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

In addition to managing all support aspects of the post-go-live implementation, this individual will also plan and manage all projects for ongoing business support.
