5 Beauty Tips We Learned From Our Moms

Time and time again, it’s said that mother knows best and we can’t argue with that, especially when it comes to beauty tips including skin care advice. Tip 1: Remove All Makeup Before Bed

After a long night, sleeping is probably the only thing on your mind, but you should muster up the energy to remove your makeup and cleanse your skin. Sleeping in makeup can clog pores and disrupt the skin’s natural self-repair process. “My Mom always told me to wash my face and makeup before bed if I don’t want to break out,” says Clarisonic Digital Media Manager Sara. Before crawling into bed, remove all traces of foundation, concealer, and makeup. It’ll only take a minute or two, and the payoff is well worth it. Tip 2: Invest in Your Skin Care

Tip 3: Treat Sunscreen Like Gold

If you think back on your childhood and have vivid memories of Mom slathering you in a thick coat of sunscreen before every beach day or outdoor barbecue, you’re probably not alone. Broad-spectrum sunscreen is one of the most important skin care product for people of all ages, skin types, and skin tones. So go ahead and thank Mom the next time you see her for protecting your skin against harmful ultraviolet rays all those years you couldn’t do it yourself.

“Mom always used to say sunscreen is a must, even on a cloudy day!” says Clarisonic Copywriter Tammy. “I never knew why but did it anyway.” The reason why Mom encouraged sun protection is because exposure to UV rays can cause painful sunburn and blisters, premature aging skin, and even some cancers. Now that you’re old enough to care for your own skin, make Mom proud and keep a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 on hand at all times. Apply it on all exposed areas of skin for UV protection before heading outdoors, and reapply at least every two hours.

Tip 4: Pay Attention to Your Neck & Chest

During daily skin care routines, facial skin tends to get all the pampering. Needless to say, the skin below the jawline, like on the neck and chest, is often left in the dust. This neglect can result in premature aging skin, which is much easier to prevent than it is to treat. Caring for the neck and décolletage from a young age can help combat signs of premature aging and keep your skin looking youthful for longer. “I have fair skin and am very susceptible to freckles and sunburns,” says Clarisonic PR Coordinator Maddie. “My mother use to tell me to not forget to apply products and especially sunscreen on my neck and chest.” Mom may have learned this the hard way, but every mistake is a learning opportunity. Tip 5: Don’t Tug at Skin Around Eyes

Whether you’re removing stubborn mascara or liquid liner, pulling and tugging at your eyes can do more harm than good. Over time, this rough treatment of skin around eyes can cause fine lines and wrinkles to form prematurely. “My mom gasped when she saw how I scrubbed my eyes with a cotton ball when removing my mascara,” says Clarisonic Marketing Intern Ellen. “She taught me that my waterproof mascara would come off easily if I wait about 5 seconds with my cotton pad on my eyes before I start to rub.” Since the skin around the eyes is thin and fragile, it should be treated with gentle care when removing eye makeup or applying eye cream.
