After a certain age, visible signs of aging skin are to be expected. This is a completely natural occurrence—one that’s in the cards for us all—and not a cause for concern. Still, not everyone is pleased to welcome fine lines and wrinkles, especially since they can add years to the face. The skin around the eyes is thin, delicate and often neglected—a perfect storm for signs of aging on skin to develop. Crow’s feet, creases that spread out from the corners of the eyes in the shape of a bird’s foot or footprint, are one of the most common. Some people only notice crow’s feet when they smile or laugh, but over time these lines can become deeper and more permanent regardless of your facial expression. The silver lining is that proper eye skin care can help address crow’s feet and prevent them from appearing prematurely, but can crow’s feet ever really go away completely? Read on for the answer. What Causes Crow’s Feet? We know you’re here to learn how to get rid of crow’s feet, but those efforts will be for naught if you don’t know what causes crow’s feet to appear. Below, we’re sharing a few common crow’s feet causes to keep in mind. 1. Habitual Facial Expressions Sometimes referred to as smile lines, laugh lines, or expression lines, crow’s feet can appear as a result of repeated movements of the skin around eyes such as smiling or squinting. How does this happen? When you smile or squint, the skin around your eyes and mouth folds naturally. These repetitive motions can break down elastin and collagen fibers, the proteins that give your skin its vibrancy and bounce. As the body ages, its collagen and elastin levels decline naturally, which can make it more difficult for the skin to spring back into place. What You Can Do: It’s important to express yourself. If you’re feeling happy, it’s natural to smile or laugh. Just be mindful of how often you are crinkling your skin as a result of these expressions. It’s possible you weren’t cognizant of how it could impact your skin. 2. Prolonged Sun Exposure Did you know that the sun’s harmful UV rays can break down collagen and elastin? This is why continuous (unprotected) exposure to sun rays can cause premature and sagging. You may not notice these negative side effects right away, but they will creep up on you over time making you look older than your years. What’s more, being out in the sun often causes us to squint our eyes, which goes back to the harm of habitual facial expressions mentioned above. What You Can Do: Prior to heading outdoors, apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher to all exposed areas of skin for UV protection. When caring for your eye contour, reach for a sunscreen or SPF Moisturizer that’s specially formulated for this delicate area to prevent irritation. Apply SPF liberally and reapply at least every two hours. To avoid squinting and to provide an extra layer of protection against crow’s feet, wear UV-safe sunglasses. 3. Environmental Aggressors UV rays aren’t the only culprit behind premature aging skin. Other environmental aggressors can cause free radicals to form, such as pollution and smoke, which latch onto the skin and break down collagen and elastin. If you live in a big city, this can especially be a cause for concern. What You Can Do: Don’t want to move to a rural area? You don’t have to uproot your home in the name of younger looking skin. Instead, shield your skin against free radical damage by applying antioxidants in tandem with your daily sunscreen in your daily skin care routine. Vitamin C has a great ability to neutralize free radical damage and can help reveal brighter-looking skin. Apply a vitamin C serum prior to applying sunscreen for the best line of protection. 4. Your Sleeping Position We all go to bed at night and many of us sleep in the same position for hours and hours. Similar to how habitual facial expressions can cause wrinkles to form, sleeping on your side can contribute to sleep lines which can eventually become permanent. What You Can Do: Switch to a sleeping position on your back. It’s the best way to prevent wrinkles from forming while you snooze. If you have trouble staying on your back once you fall asleep, surround yourself with body pillows which can prevent movement. An anti-aging pillow and silk pillowcases may also be helpful since they’re softer and more delicate than the cotton variety. 5. Natural Aging We all get older every single day. With the natural passing of time, your skin can begin to lose its volume. Cell turnover slows down as does moisture retention, and the result can often be visible wrinkles and lines. What You Can Do: The truth is there’s not much you can do to prevent natural aging. It’ll happen on its own, and that isn’t a bad thing! By sticking to a well-rounded skin care routine and healthy lifestyle habits, your skin can age gracefully and you can help prevent visible signs from cropping up prematurely. Can You Get Rid of Crow’s Feet? And now for the million-dollar question: can you get rid of crow’s feet? Probably not. You can help them look less obvious, but it’s much more difficult to get rid of them once they’re already there. That’s why the best treatment plan is actually a prevention plan. Do your best to keep crow’s feet from appearing starting from a young age. If you are already dealing with crow’s feet, follow the steps below which may help you see some improvement or reduction in their appearance. 1. Massage Your Eye Contour Massaging the skin helps relax muscles, stimulate blood circulation, and promote collagen and elastin production. You could massage anywhere on your body, including your eye contour thanks to the Sonic Awakening Eye Massager. The applicator is equipped with two aluminum tips for a cooling eye massage that’s relaxing and effective. Gentle and easy to use, this applicator can help reduce the appearance of crow’s feet lines and under-eye wrinkles and reveal firmer-feeling skin around the eyes in just eight weeks. To learn how to massage your eye contour with Sonic Awakening Eye Massager, watch the video below! 2. Apply Hydrating Eye Masks Hydrating eye masks and patches can moisturize the eye area, visually plumping the skin so it appears more youthful as a result. Once a week (if not more often), apply a hydrating eye mask formulated with humectant ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid to amp up moisture levels around your eye contour. The more hydrated your eye skin is, the better it will look. 3. Use Anti-Aging Products for Eyes It’s never too late to start an anti-aging eye care routine. Incorporate anti-aging eye creams, serums, and gels into your skin care routine since they can target wrinkles and lines, helping to smooth their appearance over time. Look out for ingredients for healthy skin such as retinol, vitamin C, and peptides in your anti-aging products and use them diligently. The bottom line? You could take steps to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet with proper lifestyle and skin care habits, but aging (and the fine lines and wrinkles that come along with it) is a natural part of life. Take proper precautionary measures—some of which we mentioned earlier—to prevent eye wrinkles from forming prematurely. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident in your skin!
Anyone who’s ever been on a quest to achieve a perfectly poreless complexion knows that reaching your skincare goals is a journey. However, scrolling through Instagram looking at post after post of clear skin can make you feel like you’re on the journey alone. Rarely, if ever, do we get the chance to take a look behind the scenes to see just what it take to maintain the skin you deserve. Which is why we partnered with Her Campus and challenged 20 people to take the My Clarisonic Journey. To put the My Clarisonic Journey to the test, we gifted 20 eager men and women around the country with Clarisonic Mia Smart devices and challenged them to cleanse their faces twice a day, every day for 30 days. The best part is, they don’t have to change anything about their current skincare routine but continue to use the cleansers they love, just with the Mia Smart device. Before the journey started, all 20 men and women were excited to see how the Clarisonic Mia Smart could help them tackle a wide range of skin concerns from uneven skin texture to hyperpigmentation. To track their progress, individuals submitted an unretouched, filter and makeup-free photo of themselves each week of the month-long challenge and documented whether the Mia Smart device helped them reach their skin care goals. After 30 days, the Clarisonic Mia Smart device completely changed the skin of those on the journey. Don’t believe us? We’re highlighting three incredible My Clarisonic Journeys below. Tiffany V. Before Tiffany began on her My Clarisonic Journey, she dealt with dry acne prone skin, skin sensitivity, and hyperpigmentation. Like many people her age, Tiffany considered skincare to be important to her but hadn’t really found a routine that left her with the clear and even skin tone she hoped for. “I’m extremely excited to start using the Clarisonic,” she said before using the Clarisonic Mia Smart for the first time. “I have heard so many good reviews from people that I know. My skin would really benefit from a new skincare routine. I hope to get clearer skin and better skincare habits out of this project. I recently have had more acne than usual and dry skin. I have been trying out different products but haven’t found one that works for me. Hopefully, the Clarisonic can help with that!”Despite not changing anything about her skincare routine except for cleansing with Clarisonic’s Mia Smart twice a day, Tiffany saw results in just two weeks! As you can see in her before and after pictures, the blemishes on the right side of her face cleared drastically, and her skin looks brighter and more even. “I love the product,” she declared at her two-week check-in. “It takes off all my makeup.”By the third week of the challenge, Tiffany was hooked. After just three weeks of using the Clarisonic Mia Device, she couldn’t imagine her skincare routine without it.My skin quality has been improving. I still have minor breakouts, but the Clarisonic has been helping me clean my skin before adding any products. It has easily become one of my daily essentials during my skincare routine.”As the weeks progressed and Tiffany reached the end of the 30-day challenge, her skin continued to improve, and by the end of her journey, she was rewarded with clearer, brighter, smoother skin. “I still have active acne, but I definitely feel the improvement of my skin, especially the texture from using the Clarisonic,” she explained. “With continuing my daily use, I will see even more progress.” Jared K. If you rely on countless blotting papers to get your oily T-zone through the day, you can probably relate to Jared. “My skin tends to be free from blemishes, but its oiliness and dryness are in constant flux. I'm hoping that with the Clarisonic Mia Smart I can minimize oil buildup (and consequent blackheads) around my nose and maximize moisturization around all the edges where the climate in which I live tends to drastically dry me out,” Jared said. “The device customization options and the daily reminder system all built into the Clarisonic app should help me stay consistent with my routine and give my face the dedicated attention it deserves!”“I’m ready to give my skin the best solutions available in order to best equip myself to start each day with confidence in my appearance,” he said. After just a few days, Jared loved the new addition to his new skincare routine. “Since I began using the device, the edges of my face feel less dry, and I feel like my skin shows more consistent appearance even after oil has begun to accumulate through the course of the day,” he said. “More than anything I'm happy to have a skincare routine that is impeccably consistent. Because the device gives prompts to tell me when to move from forehead to nose to cheeks, I know that each time I wash my face I'm giving equal and consistent treatment.” In just three weeks, the consistency started to pay off and Jared was rewarded with balanced, healthy skin. “Another week of use has amplified the results of the week prior—my skin feels balanced, and the consistency of the care that I'm giving my face makes me feel great as I start and end each day!”After just 30 days, Jared’s skin was clearer, brighter, significantly less oily, and without any dry skin patches in sight! “My Clarisonic device has become an integral part of my care routine—just as necessary to my morning as brushing my teeth! I love the consistency it's provided me in addressing the concerns specific to my skin and the ease with which I've been able to use the device to address these needs,” Jared said. “The skin across my forehead is noticeably softer than it was when I began to use the device, which is perfectly in line with the goal I set at the start of this campaign to minimize dryness!” Nicole R. As a self-described avid skincare lover, Nicole Rosario couldn’t wait to start her My Clarisonic Journey with the hopes of tackling her oily, textured skin and hyperpigmentation. “I’m excited to use my Clarisonic device to help me out with my uneven skin tone. I’m looking forward to the results,” Nicole said before using the Clarisonic Mia Smart for the first time. Nicole didn’t have to wait long to see the results she coveted. After just two weeks, she saw much smoother skin texture.“The device was really easy to use, and made my skin feel really soft. I also did notice my skin looks brighter with a healthy glow,” she said. After three weeks of consistent use, Nicole began to see results she didn’t even know were possible. “My skin feels so smooth and brighter also, I notice how my acne scars are less visible,” she said. “The number of blackheads has also diminished.”As her My Clarisonic Journey came to an end, Nicole credited the Mia Smart device for changing her skin completely and vowed to never go without her Clarisonic ever again. “My acne scars are barely visible, and I can’t go back without my Clarisonic,” she said. “My skin feels baby soft, and my makeup applies so much better!” Whether you’re looking to upgrade your skincare routine or tackle some of your biggest skin concerns, the My Clarisonic Journey is the perfect way to introduce a Clarisonic device into your skincare routine. You’re only 30 days away from the flawless skin of your dreams!
Skin care may generally be considered a woman’s game, but don’t be misled—men need skin care routines, too. While you may not be as inclined to layer serums and pamper yourself with face masks, there’s no excuse to skip out on skin care basics. There are certain steps, like cleansing and moisturizing that are necessities for everyone—male or female. Plus, there are steps that are more gender specific, like dealing with facial hair. Of course, if you’ve been washing your face with body wash as the full extent of your skin care routine, adopting a real regimen can seem overwhelming. That’s why you’ll want to read on, for the ultimate men’s skin care routine. 1. Cleanse at Key Times Do you only wash your face in the shower? If that’s the case, you may not be cleansing at the right frequency. The truth is, cleansing isn’t only important when your face is already wet and in close proximity to a bar of soap. There are three main times when you should be washing your face: in the morning, at night, and after working up a sweat. That’s right, if you can often be found exercising, you likely need to kick your cleansing habits up a notch. As for how to get clean at all the aforementioned times, we recommend a facial cleansing brush. The Clarisonic Mia Men is a cleansing device engineered for men’s tough, resilient skin. With its patented sonic oscillation technology, Mia Men is paired with the Charcoal Brush Head detoxifies the skin and draws out impurities from the pores, washing away sebum and pollution particles for cleaner skin. 2. Moisturize—Regardless of Skin Type Everyone needs to moisturize, no exceptions. If you had yourself convinced your oily skin negated your need for moisture, think again. You may be afraid of looking greasy, since you probably won’t want to rely on face powder to reduce shine, but moisturizer won’t make skin oilier. In fact, failing to moisturize when you have an oily skin type can result in an overproduction of oil. To avoid experiencing that issue, go ahead and moisturize! Trust us, you’ll be better off. Stick with a moisturizer that’s fit for your skin type—if you’re oily, you can opt for a product with a matte finish. 3. Don’t Forget the Eyes Dark circles are an issue for both genders but you’re a lot more likely to see men with prominent darkness under their eyes. The reason being, there aren’t as many men embracing the camouflaging power of concealer. Thankfully, even if you’d prefer to keep your face makeup-free, there is a way to diminish dark circles—by introducing an eye cream to your routine. Choose a cooling option, with caffeine, for an early morning pick-me-up. 4. Take Care of Facial Hair If you’ve made it to adulthood, it’s probable that you’ve found a shaving routine that works for you, but there’s always room for improvement. The Clarisonic Mia Men could be just what you need - the 60 second cleansing clears buildup on skin and helps prep your face and neck for a closer shave. For those of you who prefer to leave a bit of facial hair behind, don’t feel left out. Mia Men can also help make beards feel softer and effectively cleanses the skin under your beard. 5. Be Stringent with SPF Much like moisturizer, everyone—and we mean everyone—needs sunscreen. Essentially, if your skin care routine doesn’t include an adequate amount of SPF, you’re doing your skin a disservice. Not only can slathering your skin with sunscreen ward off dreaded sunburns, but it can also prevent premature signs of aging and even certain forms of skin cancer. That’s why it’s so important to stay sun safe and wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF value of 30 or higher every day. Oh, and don’t forget to toss on a hat and sunglasses with UV protection before spending time outside.
When it comes to skincare advice, dermatologists are chock-full of helpful tips and tricks. Dermatologists have the intel you need to address your concerns and achieve your skincare goals. Naturally, we asked the brain of board-certified dermatologist Dr. Anita Saluja of For Your Best Self on all things acne. Here, she shares five of the best skincare tips to both prevent and treat acne. Grab a notebook and prepare to take notes! Acne Tip 1: Acne-Fighting Products Are Key There is no one-size-fits-all skincare routine for people with acne prone skin. What works for you may not work for your best friend. If you’re not sure where to start, consider investing in a Clarisonic Mia Smart or Mia Prima to cleanse the skin. If you have products you already love, the Mia Smart or Mia Prima can help them cleanse your skin more effectively. The devices also pair excellently with our Pore & Blemish Gel Cleanser. If you’re looking for more recommendation for products formulated with the top ingredients for acne, check out some of Dr. Saluja’s favorites: Serum: “SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel is great for helping to calm inflamed acne after cleansing,” she says. Sunscreen: All skin types need to protect their skin against UV damage. Since some sunscreens can cause breakouts, you’ll want to find one feels lightweight and silky and dries to a comfortable finish. “SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50 is one of my favorite sunscreens for acne-prone skin,” Dr. Saluja says. Spot Treatment: No acne skincare routine is complete without a spot treatment. Reach for one that’s formulated with benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or sulfur. Dr. Saluja is particularly fond of La Roche Posay’s fan-favorite spot treatment Effaclar Duo. Acne Tip 2: Be Picky with Your Cleanser If you’re invested in targeting your acne, you should take your cleansing routine seriously, and part of that includes using the best cleanser for acne. “Look for a skin cleanser with salicylic acid, a tried and true ingredient, that improves abnormal shedding of skin cells and helps unclog pores,” Dr. Saluja says. “In turn, this action helps prevent new acne from forming.” Since preventing acne is equally as important as treating it, this is great advice to follow. In addition to salicylic acid, Dr. Saluja recommends scanning cleanser labels for lipohydroxy acid (LHA). “LHA is also quite tolerable, so it's less likely to irritate sensitive skin,” she says. The Clarisonic Pore & Blemish Gel Cleanser is formulated with 2 percent salicylic acid and an exclusive micro-exfoliating LHA to help clear and prevent acne breakouts without over-drying the skin. With continued use, expect to see skin that looks clearer and feels more comfortable, as well as a reduced appearance of pores. Acne Tip 3: Cleanse With a Clarisonic Cleansing your skin is one of the most important parts of any skincare routine, but it’s particularly important for people with acne prone skin. Acne feeds on bacteria and clogged pores and maintaining a regular cleansing schedule can help to keep those irritants at bay. “A Clarisonic has patented technology to work gently to clean the skin more effectively than anything else, including your hands,” she says. “By removing makeup, dirt, environmental pollutants, and whatever else that is trapped in pores, your skin looks smoother and feels softer. I see this in my patients.” While a Clarisonic can help you achieve clearer, brighter skin, you may not want to use it every time you cleanse your skin. Dr. Saluja urges everyone to use their best judgment. Overall, everyone can benefit from cleansing with a Clarisonic if they customize their own routine with the right brush head(s) and frequency. “Most people do best with daily Clarisonic cleansing, but some might do better with using it three times a week,” Dr. Saluja says. “As with all routines, experiment and practice until you find what works best for you.” Acne Tip 4: Curb Poor Lifestyle Habits Your acne-fighting cleansing routine may be next to perfect, but that’s only one part of the journey towards clearer-looking skin. Your lifestyle habits matter too, and if they’re not up to snuff you risk ruining all of hard work and dedication. So, in addition to following a self-care routine that works for you, eat a healthy diet of fresh vegetables and fruits. “Avoid processed or sugary foods,” Dr. Saluja recommends. Exercise regularly to get your blood pumping, even if it’s a brisk walk for 30 minutes each day. “And, don't forget to get your beauty sleep,” Dr. Saluja says. “Resting for 7 to 8 hours a night helps our bodies and our skin reset.” Acne Tip 5: Don’t Let Skin Purging Ruin Your Momentum Introducing a new product to your skincare routine can sometimes be frustrating if you have acne prone skin. For example, using a new device like a Clarisonic, for the first time is definitely exciting—if you experience positive results, that is. But if on your quest to eliminate breakouts you experience more of them as a result of introducing a Clarisonic in your routine, you may be tempted to give up on the tool altogether. This reaction is called skin purging, and it isn’t a cause for concern. “Skin purging, when the skin experiences more breakouts temporarily after a change in a skincare routine, can occur with over-exfoliation or irritation,” Dr. Saluja says. Since Clarisonic facial cleansing brushes are so efficient at deep cleaning the skin, the stimulating effect can in some cases make the skin look worse before it starts to look better. Dr. Saluja’s advice? Stick with your Clarisonic cleansing routine, but be gentle until your skin settles down. “Start using your Clarisonic once every three days, then every other day,” she says. “Take your time to build up to regular daily use. Also, try a few brush heads to see which suits your skin best and keep your Clarisonic brush head clean.” Rinse your brush head after every use and replace it every three months. Skin purging is a small hurdle on the way towards the best skin of your life!
Time and time again, it’s said that mother knows best and we can’t argue with that, especially when it comes to beauty tips including skin care advice. In celebration of Mother’s Day, the Clarisonic team is giving credit to our leading ladies by sharing five all-too-important beauty tips passed down from Mom. Tip 1: Remove All Makeup Before Bed After a long night, sleeping is probably the only thing on your mind, but you should muster up the energy to remove your makeup and cleanse your skin. Sleeping in makeup can clog pores and disrupt the skin’s natural self-repair process. “My Mom always told me to wash my face and makeup before bed if I don’t want to break out,” says Clarisonic Digital Media Manager Sara. Before crawling into bed, remove all traces of foundation, concealer, and makeup. It’ll only take a minute or two, and the payoff is well worth it. To deep clean your skin more effectively than using just your hands, reach for a Clarisonic Mia Smart and a cleansing brush head catered to your skin type and concerns. Tip 2: Invest in Your Skin Care Skin is your body’s largest organ. When it comes to caring for it, you don’t want to cut any corners. That said, Mom likely didn’t advise you to spend your entire paycheck on skin care products. To be clear, investing in your skin doesn’t mean splurging beyond your means. It simply means doing your research and using products and tools that can address your top concerns and give you the results you (and your skin) deserve. “My mom was a tomboy and barely wore makeup, but she made sure that her skin care routine is perfect,” says Clarisonic Creative Manager Stephanie. “She would say ‘find your skin care routine and do it every day – cleanser, toner, and moisturizer’.” After all, you’re going to be in this skin for your entire lifetime—don’t you want it to look its best? Tip 3: Treat Sunscreen Like Gold If you think back on your childhood and have vivid memories of Mom slathering you in a thick coat of sunscreen before every beach day or outdoor barbecue, you’re probably not alone. Broad-spectrum sunscreen is one of the most important skin care product for people of all ages, skin types, and skin tones. So go ahead and thank Mom the next time you see her for protecting your skin against harmful ultraviolet rays all those years you couldn’t do it yourself. “Mom always used to say sunscreen is a must, even on a cloudy day!” says Clarisonic Copywriter Tammy. “I never knew why but did it anyway.” The reason why Mom encouraged sun protection is because exposure to UV rays can cause painful sunburn and blisters, premature aging skin, and even some cancers. Now that you’re old enough to care for your own skin, make Mom proud and keep a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 on hand at all times. Apply it on all exposed areas of skin for UV protection before heading outdoors, and reapply at least every two hours. Tip 4: Pay Attention to Your Neck & Chest During daily skin care routines, facial skin tends to get all the pampering. Needless to say, the skin below the jawline, like on the neck and chest, is often left in the dust. This neglect can result in premature aging skin, which is much easier to prevent than it is to treat. Caring for the neck and décolletage from a young age can help combat signs of premature aging and keep your skin looking youthful for longer. “I have fair skin and am very susceptible to freckles and sunburns,” says Clarisonic PR Coordinator Maddie. “My mother use to tell me to not forget to apply products and especially sunscreen on my neck and chest.” Mom may have learned this the hard way, but every mistake is a learning opportunity. So heed Mom’s advice and extend your skin care routine down to your neck and chest—you won’t regret it! It can be hard to find time to care for your neck and chest, but our Firming Massage Head can make things easier. One minute per day is all it takes to target 15 signs of aging on the face, neck, and décolletage. With continued use over 12 weeks, you can help transform your skin so it feels firmer and looks more defined. Watch the video above for tips on how to massage your neck and chest with Firming Massage Head! Tip 5: Don’t Tug at Skin Around Eyes Whether you’re removing stubborn mascara or liquid liner, pulling and tugging at your eyes can do more harm than good. Over time, this rough treatment of skin around eyes can cause fine lines and wrinkles to form prematurely. “My mom gasped when she saw how I scrubbed my eyes with a cotton ball when removing my mascara,” says Clarisonic Marketing Intern Ellen. “She taught me that my waterproof mascara would come off easily if I wait about 5 seconds with my cotton pad on my eyes before I start to rub.” Since the skin around the eyes is thin and fragile, it should be treated with gentle care when removing eye makeup or applying eye cream. Let’s raise a glass to beloved Moms who—among many noteworthy achievements—have helped pave the way towards healthy skin for daughters everywhere! These beauty tips are truly ones we live by and we hope you do, too!
Anyone who knows anything about skincare knows that exfoliating is an essential part of any skincare routine. It can eliminate a rough skin texture, help even the skin’s tone, improve clarity, and also reduce the risk of clogged pores and breakouts. As crucial as exfoliating is, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of information out there for the people who need it most: people with acne prone skin. If you’ve been searching high and low for information on exfoliating acne prone skin, your search ends here. Exfoliation involves removing the topmost layer of skin to reveal the softer, smoother, brighter cells underneath. There are two types of exfoliation, physical—which involves manually scrubbing away dead cells—and chemical—which involves dissolving dead cells with a skin care acid—to choose from and there’s been much debate over which one is better. That answer won’t be the same for everyone, and will largely depend on your skin type and tolerance levels. Whether physical or chemical, choosing an exfoliator is not a decision you want to make in haste. Above all else, consider your skin type to ensure you don’t cause unnecessary damage or irritation with your exfoliation routine. Can You Exfoliate on Acne-Prone Skin? The answer is yes, you can exfoliate on acne-prone skin. In fact, regular exfoliation on acne-prone skin can help reduce the likelihood of breakouts! But wait, there’s a catch. You want to make sure you follow the proper exfoliation routine for acne-prone skin, especially if you are dealing with an active breakout. How to Exfoliate Acne Prone Skin If you’re looking to exfoliate on acne-prone skin, follow these tips to help ensure the best results. Tip 1: Be Gentle The key to successful exfoliation, regardless of your skin type, is being gentle. Many exfoliators already have chemical exfoliants, tiny beads, or sonic technology that already does the action for you. Scrubbing rigorously or forcefully won’t help you achieve better results; in fact, it could set your progress back tremendously. If you are exfoliating with the Clarisonic Sonic Exfoliator, let the exfoliating brush glide over your facial contours with ease. Don’t add any extra pressure. If you have an acne breakout that is sensitive to the touch, it is okay to skip that sensitive area. Once the inflammation has calmed, exfoliate the area to help boost cell turnover. Tip 2: Read Your Labels Chemical exfoliants can sometimes be harsh on the skin and if you’re already using acne-fighting products with ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide in them, applying more chemicals to your face may wreak havoc on your skin. If you decide to use a chemical exfoliant, be sure to read the ingredients to ensure they won’t adversely react to the products you are already using on your face. Tip 3: Choose Your Exfoliation Tool Wisely Instead of using a harsh scrub which can aggravate acne, exfoliate your acne-prone skin with the Sonic Exfoliator, our gentle exfoliating brush. It can act as a 60-second scrub replacement to help you achieve soft, smooth, and radiant-looking skin without damage. Pair it with our glycolic acid peel cleanser, Skin Renewing Peel Treatment, for results comparable to a professional glycolic acid peel, including decongested pores, improved skin clarity, polished skin, a boost in cell turnover, and better absorption of subsequent skin care products. It’s gentle enough for all skin types to use, including sensitive and acne-prone! Tip 4: Don’t Overdo It How often one should exfoliate is an ongoing debate amongst industry professionals. Some experts agree that once per week is sufficient for most skin types, while others recommend a more frequent routine of 2-3 times per week. Follow an exfoliation routine that works with your skin’s tolerance levels to avoid over-exfoliation, which manifests as uncomfortable, dry, and irritated skin. Tip 5: Moisturize Afterwards All skin types must moisturize after exfoliating. As long as you don’t over-exfoliate, exfoliating shouldn’t make your face feel dry. But because you must wash your face before exfoliating, you should always complete your skincare routine with a moisturizer. For acne-prone skin, we recommend a lightweight, oil-free, non-comedogenic face cream to reintroduce any lost moisture. Bonus points if it’s formulated with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to target existing blemishes.
