The best anti-aging skincare regimen starts with strengthening and protecting your skin to help it function at its very best regardless of your age. The following steps should form the foundation of your anti-aging skincare regimen. Use these as a starting point and then add and adjust to fit to your specific skin type and anti-aging concerns. 1. Use Broad Spectrum Sunscreen With SPF 30 Or Higher Every Day Although it’s generally not the first step in an anti-aging skincare routine, wearing sunscreen every day, rain or shine, is absolutely the most important step. That’s why we’re putting it first on our list. The sun’s rays, even when you can’t see them, are the number one cause of skin aging (i.e., brown spots and discolorations, and fine lines and wrinkles). So it’s vital that your anti-aging skincare routine include daily use of a broad spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher. Otherwise, all your other anti-aging skincare efforts will not produce the results you want. 2. Wash Your Face Twice Daily Cleanse your face twice per day with a gentle face wash formulated for your specific skin type (i.e., oily, dry, or combination). Be sure to remove your makeup before you go to bed! Leaving your makeup on overnight can clog pores leading to breakouts, blackheads, and skin inflammation. Plus, during the day, your skin is exposed to dirt, sweat, oil and environmental pollutants, all of which can cause your skin stress so wash it away before bed to give your skin rest. Bonus reason: perfectly cleansed skin will help your anti-aging treatment products absorb better. 3. Consider Using Toner With Anti-Aging Ingredients Although it’s not an imperative, you may find you want to restore balance to your skin post-cleanse with a gentle facial toner. Look for a toner that contains ingredients known to soothe skin and be beneficial for anti-aging such as antioxidants, ceramides or hyaluronic acid. The idea here is to restore and boost your skin’s natural barrier, so avoid astringent and/or alcohol based toners that can strip your skin and cause irritation. 4. Exfoliate Regularly with Either a Chemical or Physical Exfoliant Aging skin does not shed skin cells as quickly as younger skin. Regular exfoliation helps correct this process and reveals smoother, more radiant younger-looking skin. Chemical exfoliant treatments such as alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs) or Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA or salicylic acid) help to gently slough away rough, dead skin cells and unclog pores. Physical exfoliants, such as jojoba beads, physically clear away dead skin cells on the surface of skin. If you use a physical exfoliant, beware of harsh, abrasive face scrubs that can tear at your skin and cause damage. 5. Treat Your Skin With An Anti-Aging Serum or Moisturizer Follow the exfoliation step with a facial serum or moisturizer formulated with ingredients geared to your specific anti-aging concerns. For example, you may want to try a vitamin C serum for firmness and discolorations or a moisturizer that contains retinol for fine lines and wrinkles. If you choose a serum, be sure to follow it with a sunscreen during the day. If you are opting for a moisturizer during the day, make sure it contains SPF 30 or higher. Should You Explore Next-Level Anti-Aging Skincare Products and Cosmetic Procedures? That decision is totally up to you. Depending on the specific anti-aging concern you want to address, there are numerous anti-aging innovations, treatments, and procedures out there to explore. But whatever you choose to do, use the above steps as the basis of your best anti-aging skin-care regimen. They will go a long way to maintaining and protecting your skin, helping it to look healthy and radiant for years to come.
Remove Eye Makeup First – 2 Minutes This step will probably take you the longest, depending on how heavy your makeup is. But hang in there—you can do it in 2 minutes, probably less! For mascara and light eyeshadow and liner, you can use water and mild cleanser. No makeup remover required. First, splash your eye area with lukewarm water. Then, using pea-sized amount of cleanser, very gently massage your entire orbital eye area (eyes closed, of course) with your fingertips in a circular motion. In particular, focus on your lashes and lashline to help dissolve the mascara. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. You may have to repeat is your mascara is waterproof. For heavy eye makeup removal, we recommend using a face makeup remover. Makeup removers come in several different forms, including liquids, gels, oils and wipes. You can even use coconut oil in a pinch if you’re looking for an easy makeup remover substitute. Just be sure to use a gentle makeup remover so avoid harsh ingredients like alcohol or fragrance. Gently massage a generous amount of over the eye area giving it few moments to start to dissolve your makeup. Then, very carefully wipe it away with a soft cotton pad. Remember: no tugging, pulling or scrubbing at your very delicate eye area. You should be using enough product to allow the cotton pad to easily slide over your skin. Use a Clarisonic Facial Cleansing Brush: The Best Makeup Remover – 1 Minute Time to fire up your Clarisonic facial cleansing brush. There are two great reasons why we feel a Clarisonic is the best makeup remover: First, it will remove makeup, oil and impurities 6 times better than your hands alone. Second, it only takes one minute! Run warm water over your device and add a dollop of cleanser to outer edge of the brush. Turn it on and spend 20 seconds on forehead, 20 seconds on nose and chin, and then 10 on each cheek. Don’t press too hard, let the brush glide over your skin for maximum effectiveness. If you have a Mia 2, Mia FIT or SMART Profile device, there’s a built-in timer that pauses briefly during the one-minute cycle when it is time to move your cleansing brush to another area of your face. When the cycle is finished, the brush automatically stops. Rinse Your Face and Pat Dry – 30 seconds Using lukewarm water, rinse away the excess cleanser and makeup residue. Pat dry with a soft towel. Give your cleansing brush a quick rinse and set it out to dry. Apply Skincare Treatments (optional) – 1 minute, 30 seconds OK, you could go right to bed now, but if you can possibly stay awake 90 seconds longer, we recommend completing at least a step or two more of your regular skincare routine. When your face is freshly cleansed and makeup-free, it’s prepped to get the most benefit from your skincare products. Nighttime is also a great time to apply special treatments because you won’t be applying makeup over the top. So throw on an AHA or BHA exfoliant product and an anti-aging moisturizer or treatment serum. It takes just a few seconds. You will be glad you did when you wake in the morning with smooth, healthy skin. That’s it. You’re done. Now, go to bed!
Start Wearing Sunscreen SPF 30 or Higher Every Day Wear a broad spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher every day. Even if it’s cloudy. Sun damage is the number one cause of skin aging. Telltale signs of sun damage include skin discolorations (aka dark spots), fine lines, wrinkles, and rough skin texture—all of the signs we also associate with aging skin Don’t Sleep in Your Makeup Give your skin a break by washing away your makeup and all the environmental stressors your skin has been exposed to during the day. Washing off all your makeup before bed also gives you the opportunity to apply anti-aging treatment products to perfectly cleansed skin for maximum absorption and maximum benefit. Develop a Daily Anti-Aging Skincare Routine • Research the best skincare products for aging skin to find ones that are high-quality. Also, select products that are formulated for your skin type. For example, if you have oily skin, don’t choose a rich moisturizing cream. • Start simply with facial cleansing and moisturizing in the morning and evening. Make sure your daytime moisturizer contains SPF 30 or higher. • Depending on your skin’s specific needs, add in non-astringent toning, non-abrasive exfoliation and serum/treatment steps to round out your anti-aging skincare regimen. Lead a Healthy Lifestyle Finally, the best anti-aging skincare includes caring for yourself as a whole, so remember to: • Take care of your body - eat a healthy diet, stay hydrated, exercise regularly, set a regular sleep schedule, and don’t smoke. • Take care of your mind - spend time with loved ones and practice stress reduction and relaxation techniques.
Time and time again, it’s said that mother knows best and we can’t argue with that, especially when it comes to beauty tips including skin care advice. In celebration of Mother’s Day, the Clarisonic team is giving credit to our leading ladies by sharing five all-too-important beauty tips passed down from Mom. Tip 1: Remove All Makeup Before Bed After a long night, sleeping is probably the only thing on your mind, but you should muster up the energy to remove your makeup and cleanse your skin. Sleeping in makeup can clog pores and disrupt the skin’s natural self-repair process. “My Mom always told me to wash my face and makeup before bed if I don’t want to break out,” says Clarisonic Digital Media Manager Sara. Before crawling into bed, remove all traces of foundation, concealer, and makeup. It’ll only take a minute or two, and the payoff is well worth it. To deep clean your skin more effectively than using just your hands, reach for a Clarisonic Mia Smart and a cleansing brush head catered to your skin type and concerns. Tip 2: Invest in Your Skin Care Skin is your body’s largest organ. When it comes to caring for it, you don’t want to cut any corners. That said, Mom likely didn’t advise you to spend your entire paycheck on skin care products. To be clear, investing in your skin doesn’t mean splurging beyond your means. It simply means doing your research and using products and tools that can address your top concerns and give you the results you (and your skin) deserve. “My mom was a tomboy and barely wore makeup, but she made sure that her skin care routine is perfect,” says Clarisonic Creative Manager Stephanie. “She would say ‘find your skin care routine and do it every day – cleanser, toner, and moisturizer’.” After all, you’re going to be in this skin for your entire lifetime—don’t you want it to look its best? Tip 3: Treat Sunscreen Like Gold If you think back on your childhood and have vivid memories of Mom slathering you in a thick coat of sunscreen before every beach day or outdoor barbecue, you’re probably not alone. Broad-spectrum sunscreen is one of the most important skin care product for people of all ages, skin types, and skin tones. So go ahead and thank Mom the next time you see her for protecting your skin against harmful ultraviolet rays all those years you couldn’t do it yourself. “Mom always used to say sunscreen is a must, even on a cloudy day!” says Clarisonic Copywriter Tammy. “I never knew why but did it anyway.” The reason why Mom encouraged sun protection is because exposure to UV rays can cause painful sunburn and blisters, premature aging skin, and even some cancers. Now that you’re old enough to care for your own skin, make Mom proud and keep a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 on hand at all times. Apply it on all exposed areas of skin for UV protection before heading outdoors, and reapply at least every two hours. Tip 4: Pay Attention to Your Neck & Chest During daily skin care routines, facial skin tends to get all the pampering. Needless to say, the skin below the jawline, like on the neck and chest, is often left in the dust. This neglect can result in premature aging skin, which is much easier to prevent than it is to treat. Caring for the neck and décolletage from a young age can help combat signs of premature aging and keep your skin looking youthful for longer. “I have fair skin and am very susceptible to freckles and sunburns,” says Clarisonic PR Coordinator Maddie. “My mother use to tell me to not forget to apply products and especially sunscreen on my neck and chest.” Mom may have learned this the hard way, but every mistake is a learning opportunity. So heed Mom’s advice and extend your skin care routine down to your neck and chest—you won’t regret it! It can be hard to find time to care for your neck and chest, but our Firming Massage Head can make things easier. One minute per day is all it takes to target 15 signs of aging on the face, neck, and décolletage. With continued use over 12 weeks, you can help transform your skin so it feels firmer and looks more defined. Watch the video above for tips on how to massage your neck and chest with Firming Massage Head! Tip 5: Don’t Tug at Skin Around Eyes Whether you’re removing stubborn mascara or liquid liner, pulling and tugging at your eyes can do more harm than good. Over time, this rough treatment of skin around eyes can cause fine lines and wrinkles to form prematurely. “My mom gasped when she saw how I scrubbed my eyes with a cotton ball when removing my mascara,” says Clarisonic Marketing Intern Ellen. “She taught me that my waterproof mascara would come off easily if I wait about 5 seconds with my cotton pad on my eyes before I start to rub.” Since the skin around the eyes is thin and fragile, it should be treated with gentle care when removing eye makeup or applying eye cream. Let’s raise a glass to beloved Moms who—among many noteworthy achievements—have helped pave the way towards healthy skin for daughters everywhere! These beauty tips are truly ones we live by and we hope you do, too!
After a certain age, visible signs of aging skin are to be expected. This is a completely natural occurrence—one that’s in the cards for us all—and not a cause for concern. Still, not everyone is pleased to welcome fine lines and wrinkles, especially since they can add years to the face. The skin around the eyes is thin, delicate and often neglected—a perfect storm for signs of aging on skin to develop. Crow’s feet, creases that spread out from the corners of the eyes in the shape of a bird’s foot or footprint, are one of the most common. Some people only notice crow’s feet when they smile or laugh, but over time these lines can become deeper and more permanent regardless of your facial expression. The silver lining is that proper eye skin care can help address crow’s feet and prevent them from appearing prematurely, but can crow’s feet ever really go away completely? Read on for the answer. What Causes Crow’s Feet? We know you’re here to learn how to get rid of crow’s feet, but those efforts will be for naught if you don’t know what causes crow’s feet to appear. Below, we’re sharing a few common crow’s feet causes to keep in mind. 1. Habitual Facial Expressions Sometimes referred to as smile lines, laugh lines, or expression lines, crow’s feet can appear as a result of repeated movements of the skin around eyes such as smiling or squinting. How does this happen? When you smile or squint, the skin around your eyes and mouth folds naturally. These repetitive motions can break down elastin and collagen fibers, the proteins that give your skin its vibrancy and bounce. As the body ages, its collagen and elastin levels decline naturally, which can make it more difficult for the skin to spring back into place. What You Can Do: It’s important to express yourself. If you’re feeling happy, it’s natural to smile or laugh. Just be mindful of how often you are crinkling your skin as a result of these expressions. It’s possible you weren’t cognizant of how it could impact your skin. 2. Prolonged Sun Exposure Did you know that the sun’s harmful UV rays can break down collagen and elastin? This is why continuous (unprotected) exposure to sun rays can cause premature and sagging. You may not notice these negative side effects right away, but they will creep up on you over time making you look older than your years. What’s more, being out in the sun often causes us to squint our eyes, which goes back to the harm of habitual facial expressions mentioned above. What You Can Do: Prior to heading outdoors, apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher to all exposed areas of skin for UV protection. When caring for your eye contour, reach for a sunscreen or SPF Moisturizer that’s specially formulated for this delicate area to prevent irritation. Apply SPF liberally and reapply at least every two hours. To avoid squinting and to provide an extra layer of protection against crow’s feet, wear UV-safe sunglasses. 3. Environmental Aggressors UV rays aren’t the only culprit behind premature aging skin. Other environmental aggressors can cause free radicals to form, such as pollution and smoke, which latch onto the skin and break down collagen and elastin. If you live in a big city, this can especially be a cause for concern. What You Can Do: Don’t want to move to a rural area? You don’t have to uproot your home in the name of younger looking skin. Instead, shield your skin against free radical damage by applying antioxidants in tandem with your daily sunscreen in your daily skin care routine. Vitamin C has a great ability to neutralize free radical damage and can help reveal brighter-looking skin. Apply a vitamin C serum prior to applying sunscreen for the best line of protection. 4. Your Sleeping Position We all go to bed at night and many of us sleep in the same position for hours and hours. Similar to how habitual facial expressions can cause wrinkles to form, sleeping on your side can contribute to sleep lines which can eventually become permanent. What You Can Do: Switch to a sleeping position on your back. It’s the best way to prevent wrinkles from forming while you snooze. If you have trouble staying on your back once you fall asleep, surround yourself with body pillows which can prevent movement. An anti-aging pillow and silk pillowcases may also be helpful since they’re softer and more delicate than the cotton variety. 5. Natural Aging We all get older every single day. With the natural passing of time, your skin can begin to lose its volume. Cell turnover slows down as does moisture retention, and the result can often be visible wrinkles and lines. What You Can Do: The truth is there’s not much you can do to prevent natural aging. It’ll happen on its own, and that isn’t a bad thing! By sticking to a well-rounded skin care routine and healthy lifestyle habits, your skin can age gracefully and you can help prevent visible signs from cropping up prematurely. Can You Get Rid of Crow’s Feet? And now for the million-dollar question: can you get rid of crow’s feet? Probably not. You can help them look less obvious, but it’s much more difficult to get rid of them once they’re already there. That’s why the best treatment plan is actually a prevention plan. Do your best to keep crow’s feet from appearing starting from a young age. If you are already dealing with crow’s feet, follow the steps below which may help you see some improvement or reduction in their appearance. 1. Massage Your Eye Contour Massaging the skin helps relax muscles, stimulate blood circulation, and promote collagen and elastin production. You could massage anywhere on your body, including your eye contour thanks to the Sonic Awakening Eye Massager. The applicator is equipped with two aluminum tips for a cooling eye massage that’s relaxing and effective. Gentle and easy to use, this applicator can help reduce the appearance of crow’s feet lines and under-eye wrinkles and reveal firmer-feeling skin around the eyes in just eight weeks. To learn how to massage your eye contour with Sonic Awakening Eye Massager, watch the video below! 2. Apply Hydrating Eye Masks Hydrating eye masks and patches can moisturize the eye area, visually plumping the skin so it appears more youthful as a result. Once a week (if not more often), apply a hydrating eye mask formulated with humectant ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid to amp up moisture levels around your eye contour. The more hydrated your eye skin is, the better it will look. 3. Use Anti-Aging Products for Eyes It’s never too late to start an anti-aging eye care routine. Incorporate anti-aging eye creams, serums, and gels into your skin care routine since they can target wrinkles and lines, helping to smooth their appearance over time. Look out for ingredients for healthy skin such as retinol, vitamin C, and peptides in your anti-aging products and use them diligently. The bottom line? You could take steps to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet with proper lifestyle and skin care habits, but aging (and the fine lines and wrinkles that come along with it) is a natural part of life. Take proper precautionary measures—some of which we mentioned earlier—to prevent eye wrinkles from forming prematurely. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident in your skin!
Pore size is a common skincare complaint—ranking up there with acne and the first signs of aging—but it’s not something you have to live with. While you can’t get rid of enlarged pores entirely, you can take steps to reduce the appearance of your pores to make them look smaller. 1. Keep your skin clean One of the easiest ways to get smaller-looking pores is keeping your skin clean. Excess oil can cause pores to look larger than they actually are, so keeping your skin free of impurities will go a long way in getting your enlarged pores to look smaller. Morning and night, wash your face with a cleanser formulated for your skin type. 2. Moisturize When your skin is dehydrated it can cause your pores to appear larger than they actually are. To combat this be sure to moisturize your skin immediately after cleansing. This step can help to plump the appearance of your skin, making pores look less noticeable. 3. Exfoliate If you don’t already, it’s time to add exfoliation to your skincare routine. Clogged pores naturally appear enlarged and exfoliation is a great way to decongest them as it helps to remove dead skin cells buildup and impurities. Try an exfoliating cleanser, formulated to help make enlarged pores appear smaller, like Clarisonic Pore and Blemish Gel Cleanser. This deep facial cleanser, formulated with 2% salicylic acid, helps to reduce the appearance of pores without over-drying the skin 4. Use a facial cleansing brush To create the illusion of smaller pores, use a Clarisonic facial cleansing brush along with Clarisonic Deep Pore Brush Head every night . This brush head is specially designed to help flush out dirt and debris from the day to help make pores appear smaller since they are less likely to become congested and enlarged. 5. Try a toner If you have enlarged pores, toning is an essential step in your skincare routine that you may be missing. Toners follow cleansers in your regimen and help to ensure that any excess dirt, oil and leftover cleanser is removed before you move on to the next step in your routine. What’s more? Some toners can even temporarily tighten the look of pores, to truly help them appear smaller. 6. Use a weekly face mask Face masks are an excellent addition to your skincare routine if you want your pores to appear smaller. Look for clay masks formulated with charcoal which can help to attract impurities clogging your pores like a magnet. 7. Up the anti-aging ante Enlarged-looking pores can often be a side effect of getting older, so anti-aging skincare products are key if you want them to appear smaller. Products formulated with anti-aging ingredients like retinol or antioxidant vitamin C are known to help reduce the appearance of pores, leaving you with a younger-looking complexion. 8. Protect skin from the sun Another cause of enlarged-looking pores? Sun damage. Wearing broad-spectrum SPF is necessary to protect your skin from the harsh and skin-aging effects of UV rays. Daily, after cleansing, reach for a moisturizer formulated with SPF 30 or more.
