Wash Your Face Twice Daily Cleanse your face twice per day with a gentle face wash formulated for your specific skin type (i.e., oily, dry, or combination). Be sure to remove your makeup before you go to bed! Leaving your makeup on overnight can clog pores leading to breakouts, blackheads, and skin inflammation. Plus, during the day, your skin is exposed to dirt, sweat, oil and environmental pollutants, all of which can cause your skin stress so wash it away before bed to give your skin rest. Consider Using Toner With Anti-Aging Ingredients Although it’s not an imperative, you may find you want to restore balance to your skin post-cleanse with a gentle facial toner. Look for a toner that contains ingredients known to soothe skin and be beneficial for anti-aging such as antioxidants, ceramides or hyaluronic acid. The idea here is to restore and boost your skin’s natural barrier, so avoid astringent and/or alcohol based toners that can strip your skin and cause irritation. 4. Exfoliate Regularly with Either a Chemical or Physical Exfoliant Aging skin does not shed skin cells as quickly as younger skin. Regular exfoliation helps correct this process and reveals smoother, more radiant younger-looking skin. Chemical exfoliant treatments such as alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs) or Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA or salicylic acid) help to gently slough away rough, dead skin cells and unclog pores. If you choose a serum, be sure to follow it with a sunscreen during the day. If you are opting for a moisturizer during the day, make sure it contains SPF 30 or higher. Remove Eye Makeup First – 2 Minutes This step will probably take you the longest, depending on how heavy your makeup is. But hang in there—you can do it in 2 minutes, probably less! For mascara and light eyeshadow and liner, you can use water and mild cleanser. No makeup remover required. First, splash your eye area with lukewarm water. Gently massage a generous amount of over the eye area giving it few moments to start to dissolve your makeup. Then, very carefully wipe it away with a soft cotton pad. Remember: no tugging, pulling or scrubbing at your very delicate eye area. You should be using enough product to allow the cotton pad to easily slide over your skin. Nighttime is also a great time to apply special treatments because you won’t be applying makeup over the top. So throw on an AHA or BHA exfoliant product and an anti-aging moisturizer or treatment serum. It takes just a few seconds. You will be glad you did when you wake in the morning with smooth, healthy skin. That’s it. You’re done. Now, go to bed!
